The Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 was awarded jointly to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks”.
The network structure named after John Hopfield can store and reconstruct information. Geoffrey Hinton co-invented the Boltzmann machine, a stochastic model with local learning rule on networks. After the announcement G. Hinton answered the questions of journalists about the significance of his invention, the future of artificial intelligence and his concerns on this emerging technology.
